First Event of 2013-14 | ‘ONLY’ Food For Pregnancy | Cookbook Giveaway

Hi All!!
This year the events are going to be more health oriented and to start off with is going to be an interesting yet challenging theme..Pregnancy Food.
Pregnancy is a long period of 9months towards motherhood, at the end of which the woman can hold the bundle of joy, her baby, finally in her hands. It is a well-known fact that what a mother eats during pregnancy is important for her health, also  the health and development of her baby. Therefore it is important for every mother to eat right during this period
The three trimesters have different nutritional requirements but the most important nutrients required throughout pregnancy are the Calcium, Iron and the Folic acid. The pregnant woman is advised to have 5 small meals a day rather than 3 big meals.
Keeping all this in mind, create recipes that a pregnant woman can eat in small portions. See that the food is not very spicy and produce heat in the body as it can cause heart burn.
The giveaway cookbook for the winner of the event is sponsored by www.tarladalal.com. It is a book called Nutritious Recipes for Pregnancy.

‘ONLY’ SERIES OF EVENTS FOR 2013-14 | Inviting Guest Hosts |

Hello all!!

With the completion of ‘Only’ Cooking from Cookbooks, guest hosted by Gauri, the ‘ONLY’ Series would complete three successful years of cooking events. I’m so thankful to all the participants for their continued support in the events. I would also take this opportunity to request the winners of cookbooks from previous events to share a recipe from the book they have won earlier in the ongoing event.

I’ve been getting mails requesting to guest host the next year’s events and I had informed them that I would be posting the new set of events soon. So those who had already asked me and those who are interested in hosting the event, please write to me at cookingoodfood@gmail.com with the subject line ‘HOSTING ONLY SERIES’ with information about them, their blog and how long they have been blogging and what will be their contribution in leading the event.

Those who have not blogged for more than 6months and also those who do not post 4 recipes a month please do not send a request. The month of May’14 will be hosted by me as I celebrate my blog’s anniversary in the same month.

I’m looking out for people who have a serious interest in hosting the event, who can steer the event they have chosen and popularize it. I want those people who could acknowledge entries on time and not just happily sit back after  announcing the event and then do nothing about it. Basically I’m looking for those bloggers who can give time and commitment for the event and encourage, motivate people to participate more and explore their culinary skills.

I’m happy to inform you that www.tarladalal.com, for the fourth consecutive year will be sponsoring the giveaway and I’m short of words to thank them. Tarlaji, can’t thank you enough..it means a lot to me and my readers.

    ‘Only’ Event Announcement For January’13

    Hi all!!
Wish you all a very Happy New year. I hope and pray that the New Year brings peace and harmony in this world. I also pray that this world is a better place for women to live and travel safely. Also, I use this platform to criticize those men who act as beasts and treat women like a piece of toy. I also hope that stringent laws are made against such social beasts this year in India.
Coming back to food.. We all love food and we all love to binge on tasty food, and for me no food is tastier than the street food. We have had a tongue tickling  ‘Only’ event earlier on Chaats where we all bloggers shared our recipes ..This time of the year where we  start afresh with new set of New Year resolutions, my one of the resolutions is definitely to try more of other cuisines and tickle my tongue further. And I’m asking all the food bloggers to join in my resolution and try more of international cuisines.
The best way to try international cuisine is to taste the street foods. So many international street foods have become so popular in India, to name a few which are commonly available are the falafel, pita bread sandwiches, hakka noodles, shawarma rolls, som tam, dimsum, spring rolls and so on.. This event will give all of us a platform to try and indulge in more international street foods and also explore recipes which are still not commonly known or popular.
To help me conduct this event is a guest host Archana from Mad Scientist’s Kitchen. Check out her page for more details.

To encourage us to cook, www.tarladalal.com has sponsored the cookbook ‘Fast Foods Made Healthy’ for the winner of this event. The book will get shipped only in India. The cookbook winner can be any participant who is a follower of my blog publically and also likes my page on face book.

‘ONLY’ Event & Giveaway Announcement For December

    Hi All!

Here I’m finally with this month’s event announcement. December is a month of fun and frolic. Winter has set in and the market is flooded with a variety of vegetables and fruits. It’s a perfect time to indulge in more veggies, fruits and hence the theme of the event makes use of the same!!!

We all eat a variety of food everyday, right from breakfast till dinner. And during any course of the meal along with the core food we need a dish to go along with it. Suppose you are eating Idli for breakfast then you eat it either with sambhar or chutney. While eating nachos you want a salsa or a dip. Similarly, you just can’t eat a roti for lunch, one does need a curry to go with it.

Yes, you guessed it correct! This month’s theme focuses on the side dishes. The side dishes play such an important role in the completion of our meal. No meal is complete without it!! So don your cooking cap and send me side dishes of various types, it can be a dip or chutney; a dal or a curry, a salad for the kebab or your innovation. The side dish can be of any cuisine. Effect Of Estrogen On Osteoporosis and ‘ONLY’ Series Event Announcement, Giveaway For September

    Hi All!
Hope my friends and readers are doing fine.
Last few days have been chaotic in my life, as I mentioned in my last post that there are health issues which I need to sort out before I get to a steady blogging.
I’ve written articles in my blog related to hormones especially ‘the feel good ones’ here and here in my blog and which have been appreciated by many. I love to read articles on food with their health benefits and that helps me apply the knowledge that I’ve gained in the food that I cook for the family.
As we all know that the hormones play a vital role in our body and understanding their role and effect can help us minimize their negative effect and increase the positive ones. There are two major hormones that regulate a female body, Progesterone and Oestrogen/ Estrogen. Being a female in her thirties, I’m always worried about keeping a track and balance of the calcium level in my body so that my bones can stay strong and I can avoid osteoporosis in my old age. I know that my worry is also the worry for many women across the globe and hence I decided to write this post highlighting one aspect that can be controlled to avoid osteoporosis..
A woman is said to have reached the menopause when she has not had a period for one year. The average age for women to get menopause is around 50-52yrs. At this time the normal functioning of her ovaries begins to deteriorate, this brings change in the duration of her cycle, which may become shorter or longer. The periods can also become heavy or lighter.  Because of the gradual drop in the estrogen level produced by the ovaries, the lining of the womb fails to thicken up and so gradually the periods stop altogether.
For most of a woman's life, estrogen helps to protect the heart and bones, as well as maintaining the breasts, womb, vagina and bladder in their healthy state. The marked loss of estrogen in a woman's body that occurs around, and after, the menopause can, therefore, have detrimental effects on her health; as well as causing uncomfortable symptoms, such as hot flushes and night sweats (physical signs) or (psychological changes) mood swings. The effect on the bones won't be as obvious, but the loss of estrogen will certainly affect them. Lack of estrogen can increase the risk of heart disease and the bone disorder osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is where the amount of bone tissue in the body is below what is normal for a person, taking into account their sex and age.
If you looked at bone under a microscope, you'd see two types of specialized cells scattered throughout:
    • cells that continually make new bone, called osteoblasts
    • cells that continuously dissolve bone into its component materials, called osteoclasts.
Bone is therefore not a static tissue, but is always on the go. The actions of bone manufacture and disassembly are usually exactly balanced. (Ref www.netdoctor.co.uk)
The bones of the human skeleton contain 99.5% of the total calcium in the body. It is the calcium within the bones which makes them strong. The calcium within bones is available to the body should the body need it for other purposes. It is the activity of bone osteoclasts which absorb the calcium in the bone and release it into the blood stream.
Estrogen is a sex hormone that is essential to female bone health because it promotes the activity of osteoblasts, which are cells that produce bone. When estrogen levels drop during menopause, the osteoblasts aren't able to effectively produce bone. Today a large number of drugs and medications are available to cure osteoporosis but estrogen remains a fairly common treatment to conserve bone mass and prevent osteoporosis-related fractures in post-menopausal women.
By now you all must have realized how important the estrogens are in a female body and now I will tell you how easily you can replenish them in your body but before that let me introduce you to this month’s event, ‘Only’ – Cooking With Soya which is guest hosted by Preeti through the month of September, so please check her blog for the event details.

Soy is a high quality protein. It is one of only two known plant foods to contain all the essential amino acids, similar to those found in meat (the other plant food is amaranth seed, a wild green). The soybean is:
    • High in fibre
    • High in protein
    • Low in saturated fat
    • Cholesterol-free
    • Lactose-free
    • A good source of omega-3 fatty acids
    • High in phytoestrogens.
The phytoestrogens are hormone like substances that mimic the action of the hormone estrogen. The health benefits of soy for menopausal women could include fewer hot flushes, protection from coronary heart disease and lowered risk of osteoporosis.
A study shows that women in Japan and China typically have fewer hot flushes during menopause than their Western counterparts. This observation led to research into dietary differences, including the fact that Asian women tend to have soy-rich diets, while Western women have meat-rich diets. ( Ref: http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcsite.nsf)
I’ve tried to explain in this post how easily we women can control the estrogen levels in our body and help fight heart diseases and osteoporosis through eating soy and soy products. I also hope we all can cook interesting dishes with this versatile ingredient and make ourselves more healthy.

‘Only’ Event Of August & Giveaway

    Hi All!
In the month August we celebrate some big festivals like Eid and Rakshabandhan. It’s the month of holy Ramadan and girls tying the sacred thread of trust on their brother’s hand. Both the celebrations call for a royal treat and hence this theme.
This month is about eating Royal treats passed on to us by the kings and queens. Yes, we are going to celebrate Royal Cuisine here, the foods cooked in royal kitchens of India and other countries. For example the famous Lucknowi and Hyderabadi Cuisine made in the kitchen of The Nawabs, The Dum food coming from Awadh, The Peshawari food from Peshawar, The Rajputana delicacies from Marwar, The food from Marathwada and so on.
I know the royal treats are very rich and mostly high on calories and so you are most welcome to make a low calorie version as long as there’s no compromise on the taste. Similarly, there are many non vegetarian preparations made by the kings and queens, if you are a vegetarian, you can make a veg version of the preparation and mention that in your post. Also, would appreciate if you could provide some history behind the recipe.
This Royal affair on food is guest hosted by a dear blogger friend Divya who posts her recipes at Divya’s Culinary Journey.
The more elaborate details of the event can be checked out at her space. I’m lucky that www.tarladalal.com has agreed to sponsor the giveaway for the third consecutive year here at Foodelicious. My heartfelt thanks to them. For this month the cookbook which will be given as giveaway is, Punjabi Subzis. This giveaway is open only for the followers of my space as that makes us connected with each other and I feel they deserve it more to get the giveaway.

    Only Royal Cooking
So, go ahead, don a royal hat and let the royal affair begin…

Event Announcement: ‘Healthy Food For Healthy Kids’-Preschooler Snacks

    Hi All!
I’m on a event hosting spree as I’m announcing the second event which I’m hosting this month, I’ve already announced ‘Only’ Event of this month here. The new event that I’m guest hosting is called Healthy Food For Healthy Kids and is the brain child of Nithu of Nithu’s Kitchen.
When Nithu asked blogger’s to guest host her event few month’s back, I readily jumped to grab the opportunity as cooking for kids is something I love to do and also that, I rarely get a chance and time to host other events. Thanks so much Nithu for trusting me with your event.
Preschooler children lie in the age group of 2.5-3.5years. This age group children at times are  fussy eaters, parents really have to cajole them to eat food. This is the age when the children have just begun to explore the use of their fingers to eat food and hence they can be messy eaters. They are best at eating finger foods especially the dry kind. Small bites of food which they can hold and eat easily are the best for these children.
Parents to this age group children have to be extra careful with their diet as the kids grow very fast at this age. They need a diet rich in Calcium and Iron for proper growth. So, snacks or finger foods play an important role in providing them proper nutrition. Snacks which are small in size, easy to hold, tasty and rich in nutrients are the best for the preschoolers. Such snacks when given in their snack box can be easily eaten by them at the preschool or playgroup too.
The snack could be sweet or savory based on your kid’s liking but it has to be healthy and tasty which is a pre-requisite making this event very challenging. So don your chef’s cap and work with your grey cells tuned ‘ON’ and innovate healthy snacks for the preschoolers.

‘Only’ Event For July & A Cookbook Giveaway

    Hi All!
The month of July brings in monsoon, that means rains, overflowing canals and rivers, streets filled with water, clothes not drying, cloudy days and so on..Monsoon also demands frying fritters, eating chaat and sipping hot tea. But with all the water around it causes a lot of germs to grow and here’s when one needs to eat and live healthy to shove away the diseases. Hence, I thought of heating up our kitchen using the microwave. Yes, you got me correct, this month’s ONLY theme is Microwave Cooking.

A microwave oven, or simply a microwave, is a kitchen appliance that cooks or heats food by dielectric heating. This is accomplished by using microwave radiation to heat water and other polarized molecules within the food. There’s always a debate on how safe microwave cooking is or whether nutritional value of food diminishes by cooking in microwave..and I’ll not get into that. It is definitely one’s personal choice. As far as I’m concerned, I’ve found microwave cooking very useful and have never faced any health concerned problems because of that.
I’ve found microwave cooking a fast, low oil cooking method. There are some important things to be taken care of while using a microwave..
    •  Cover and cook so that the bacteria is killed.
    •  Mix the food half way through cooking or heating.
    •  After the microwave stops, let the food sit as it, as it will still be cooking under heat, like in a pressure cooker.
    •  Use microwave safe vessels and do not use plastics that may melt if used. The harmful substances in plastic may leak into the food.
    •  Cook vegetables until just done (not overcooked) to retain nutritive value.
    • Avoid cooking shelled eggs in a microwave as they tend to explode.
For a detailed read on microwave cooking read here and here.
Please make a note that, we are going to focus largely on the 'Microwave'feature of the Microwave oven. Grill and Oven can also be used.

So send me your vegetarian  entries before 1st August. There’s a giveaway cookbook called, Microwave Recipes, new edition, authored by Tarla Dalal and is sponsored by www.tarladalal.com.
